Imagine all the possibilities of AR for education: interactive textbooks, museums, and locations. For instant information, you don't have to be shackled to a computer.

ARducation

Or recreating a whole medieval village for your students who can create their own villages by shuffling around 3D layouts and unlocking hidden videos and historical information?

AR Sights

How about holding a 3D replica of the Eiffel Tower in front of your students for French class?

The video clips above are all examples of Augmented Reality used in various, innovative ways in education. AR in the classroom is just another way to engage and fascinate learners with a fresh and fun technology that will only improve by leaps and bounds in the near future.

Augmented Reality and Education


There are several benefits to using AR for education and in the classrooms.


  1. AR is useful in education because it doesn’t require many materials, and it is interactive, visual, and fun.

  2. It can bring location based learning and experience to students by supplementing existing worlds rather than creating new ones.

  3. Encourages informal learning and interaction that might help students form a connection with the content.

Uses for Education

According to Craig Kapp at the New Media Consortium, there are several uses for educational AR.

Textbooks and Books

AR, with its 3D graphics on markers, can bring a book to life for an interactive experience. Imagine history books and literature being re-enacted through 3D figures popping out of the book, or even clips of movies to help the learner visualize and connect to what they are reading. Listed below are some companies that specialize in AR books.

Simulations

AR can help the learner visualize what is not there and what can not be predicted by substituting simulations of possible outcomes or environments that are not easily accessible. AR simulations can help chemistry teachers teach chemical bonds with 3D animations, a soldier can train with simulated scenarios in immediate surroundings, the possibilities are endless.

Assistive Technology

AR can be and is of great use to the medical and rehabilitation fields by superimposing anatomy, helping patients with mental and mobile disabilities through kinetic exercises, and providing support, motivation, and assistance in various ways.

Data Visualization

AR can help disseminate data information into visual elements for easier understanding and visual learners, it can make data a whole lot more interactive and interesting than text intensive formats! An example in Craig Kapp's video is gravitational behaviours being visualized with 3-D objects in real time even as data is being changed and updated.

Storytelling

AR can tell a story through any data linked to any object or location in innovative and interactive ways. Static storytelling is no longer the only way of conveying a story or message across to the the audience.
